SOLS 6/31 So Many Books, So Little Time

Today as I corrected papers, I listened to Matched by Ally Condie. As an aside, if you've read The Giver by Lois Lowery, you really should read Matched. There are interesting parallels. I'm enjoying the story. At one point the narrator talks about how the society had been overloaded by technology and information so they decided to limit what was available. Committees sorted through everything and selected 100 songs, 100 poems, 100 painting, etc that would be the only ones to survive. An interesting concept. How do you choose?

Just yesterday coming home from the library John I were talking about how there is so much information available. There are so many books. I often get overwhelmed. I keep hearing about new books that catch my interest. My bank account could never support my book interest. I'm so thankful for the public library. I'm so thankful for print books and ebooks and audio books. I just wish I had more time to read.

  1. I LOVE Matched!!! It just captures adolescence so well...and it has that Romeo & Juliet feel to it. I took it to one of my best sophomore readers, and she read it in about a week. When she finished it in class, the slammed it down and yelled: MRS. MCCABE!!! WHERE'S THE OTHER BOOK? I KNOW THIS IS A SERIES!! HOW COULD THE AUTHOR NOT MAKE THAT STORY END RIGHT???? haha...I love it!

  2. Natalee - I totally agree. I am wondering what possible job I could find where I could just sit at home and read and read and read. As a newly initiated Ipad reader...the possibilities are endless, but the time remains limited.

  3. You will LOVE the rest of Matched. A wonderful story that made me thankful for the life I live. I can't imagine my music and books limited to only 100. Where is the fun in that? Happy Reading!

  4. More time to read would be heaven! And you have me intrigued by Matched, which I have not read. I really liked The Giver, so think this one needs to go on my to-read list.

  5. I am amazed that you can listen to a book and grade papers. Every time I try listening and interneting, I lose track of the story. I can only listen while cleaning or cooking.
