While summer is supposed to be a time for me to relax, catch up on my reading, and prepare for the coming school year, this summer our time has been consumed with house remodeling/repair. We are working hard to prepare an 150+ year old farmhouse that we are going to be renting, and hope to finish moving by the end of the month. I wasn't able to get a IMWAYR post in last week, so I'll cover two weeks with this one.

I really liked Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. I need to pick up Glass Castle the next time I'm at the library--I keep seeing it this summer on people's lists.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Glass Castle, but made the mistake of reading it right after The Pursuit of Happyness. I'm looking forward to reading Half Broke Horses because I really enjoy Jeannette Walls' writing. But I need a little break from intense memoirs of dysfunctional families.
DeleteI love the Amulet series, I need to add the rest of the series to my classroom library this year! I've read Wintering Well aloud to 4th graders and we all loved the experience. It helps that Wait's stories take place very close to our school! One of my students wrote to Wait and then she came to visit us! Happy reading week!

DeleteDo love the Fox trilogy, although the first is still my favorite. I should look at some of the adult books, but it's so hard to stop reading middle grade literature!
ReplyDeleteI'm very picky about the adult books I read. I think reading MG/YA literature has made me a pickier reader. It's got to be a really well written book for me to enjoy it!
DeleteWhen you say that you made the mistake of reading it before THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, what do you mean? I am curious because I love THE GLASS CASTLE. :)

I finished the Pursuit of Happyness and immediately launched into The Glass Castle. Both tell stories of dysfunctional families and parents who repeatedly make choices that are selfish and hurt their children. By the time I finished The Glass Castle, I needed a break from the poverty and heartbreak (even though both stories have "happy endings").
